MOQ is not one number. For a small brand, the useful question is which minimum applies to the product, the finish, the sample route and the packaging plan you are actually considering.
Direct answer
Separate the four numbers before comparing suppliers.
A quote can contain a minimum for the nail set, a minimum for a particular colour or decoration, a separate sample condition and a separate packaging run. Treating all of these as one MOQ makes a first order look more expensive—or more simple—than it really is. Ask each supplier to label the assumptions clearly.
Key facts
MOQ is a set of linked commercial assumptions.
- Product minimum
- The quantity tied to the nail set, construction and production route.
- Design or finish minimum
- A colour, decoration or hand-finished route may introduce another threshold.
- Sample condition
- Stock, modified and fully custom samples answer different questions.
- Packaging minimum
- Boxes, trays, inserts and accessories may each follow separate terms.
| Route | What to ask | Why it changes |
|---|---|---|
| Ready-stock design | Mixed quantity, available styles, packing format | Existing stock may allow smaller tests, but packaging may be generic. |
| Custom design | Design MOQ, finish, shape, revision limit | Handwork, colour matching and special decoration add development work. |
| Sample round | Sample type, fee, revision and shipping | A sample can be a stock reference, modified sample or new development. |
| Private-label pack | Box, tray, insert and accessory quantities | Printing, tooling and component runs often have different thresholds. |
01
Handmade vs machine-made
Do not compare a hand-finished art set with a printed volume set only by unit price. Record the production route, artwork detail, topcoat or finish, set contents and the evidence supplied with the sample. The decision is commercial: a detailed launch collection may need a different route from a fast test of several trend colours.
02
What the sample must prove
A first sample should answer a defined question. Check shape and width, curvature, surface finish, decoration security, set contents, packaging fit and whether the supplier can explain changes. A sample that looks attractive but cannot be tied to a repeatable specification is not yet a production decision.
03
Custom packaging changes the calculation
Ask whether the quoted packaging includes structure, print, tray, insert, adhesive, instruction card, barcode and assembly. If the answer is not clear, record each component separately. A brand can sometimes test the product with a simpler pack before committing to a fully printed retail presentation.
04
Why MOQ changes between suppliers
MOQ reflects more than factory size. It can reflect a supplier's workflow, the number of manual operations, material purchasing, artwork setup, packaging conversion and the amount of risk the supplier is willing to carry. A coordinator can make these differences visible, but only the supplier can confirm the final commercial terms.
05
A practical first-order path
Start with a short brief: product reference, target market, expected test quantity, preferred route, packaging direction and timing. Compare two or three suitable routes against the same brief. Approve a sample or sample set, record changes, then ask for a production quote that explicitly refers back to the approved version.
Method note: The distinctions in this guide are a buyer-planning framework based on supplier conversations and public product-development materials reviewed by Allen Zhao. No universal China MOQ is claimed. Confirm the exact MOQ, price, sample time and packaging terms for your own brief before ordering. Last reviewed August 22, 2026.
FAQ
Questions to send with your brief.
What is a normal MOQ for press-on nails in China?
There is no single industry-wide number. It changes with the product route, design complexity, finish, packaging and whether the supplier is quoting ready stock or a new development.
Can a small brand order samples before meeting the MOQ?
Usually, a supplier can quote a separate sample route. Confirm whether the sample is a stock reference, a modified sample or a fully custom sample, because each answers a different question.
Is packaging MOQ separate from nail MOQ?
Often. Printed boxes, trays, inserts and accessories can each introduce their own quantity or setup assumptions. Ask for product and packaging terms separately.
How should I compare two MOQ quotes?
Give both suppliers the same brief, then compare the included set contents, finish, packaging, one-time artwork or tooling charges, sample terms and delivery assumptions—not only the headline unit price.
